For some, it’s dubbed “sweater weather”. For us, it’s “sweeter whether.” The fall season is here and whether home is found in the cooler north or the balmier temperatures of the south, this sweet time of the year — which kicks off the Holiday season — is all about gathering with friends and family to enjoy each other’s company while reveling in the festivities.
So why not take the love outside? Outdoor dining turns rustic and romantic in impromptu picnics at the park or beach, with a short list of Thierry’s-approved necessary items on hand to make the occasion even more luxurious. Here is what you need to make the day’s experience a deliciously enticing success:
A sturdy but gorgeous picnic basket packed with stemware, champagne flutes and wine glasses, and of course, a blanket or tablecloth to sit and/or display the meal on.
A good bottle of champagne or wine. Light whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Rieslings are ideal for dining outdoors, while bold reds like Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux pair beautifully with…
…charcuterie. Cured meats like salami, mortadella, prosciutto and ham are picnic essentials, along with fine cheeses like manchego, brie or gouda. Give the occasion a creative twist and add dark chocolate or white-chocolate covered pretzels to your board, together with preserves made with seasonal fruit like apples, grapes, figs or berries, as well as nuts and elegant herb-laced crackers. Don’t forget a warm, crusty baguette or two to spread your favorite three-cream French cheese on, before taking a hearty bite.
Vegetables. A bright crudités platter with carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, sliced peppers and other flavorful veggies are a must. Serve with a tangy vinaigrette or ranch dressing.
Flowers. Beautiful Chrysanthemum’s create a cushion of color to the day. Look for other blooming buds like freesia or pansies to add delicate, whimsical details to the day.
Something sugary to top off a perfect afternoon. Fruit tarts will stay fresh in the mild temperatures, while a pumpkin or apple cider sponge cake pays homage to the season.
There’s no shortage of things to love about fall. Spend a day sharing many of those favorites in the open air with a group of friends — a sweet proposal, whether a sweater is involved or not.
